Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police conducted separate drives in the city’s New Market, Kuril, Wari, Uttara and Gulistan and arrested at least 65 people on charge of possessing dope items ahead of Eid shopping across the city.
The drives were conducted based on secret information since Friday night, said DB’s Joint Commissioner Mahbub Alam.
“Medicines for making unconscious, a private car, and 12 stolen mobile phones were recovered from their possession,” the DB official said. Out of the 65 suspected dope gang members, 38 were arrested from New Market area, four from the Rajdhani Market area, seven from Gulistan, five from Uttara, and 11 others from Fakirapul and Kuril Bishwaroad, the police official said.
The Joint Commissioner said, “Dope gangs are not new in Bangladesh. They become more active during the month of Ramadan, and use new tactics to target people-who go to market for shopping.”
He requested everyone not to receive anything from strangers. “Most of the dope gang cases are filed by police, and usually the gang members get bail owing to absence of witness.
Legal actions, however, will be taken against the dope gang members, according to him.
