Housing and Public Works Minister Engineer Mosharraf Hossain said there are 6,471 abandoned houses in the capital city.
“Some 351 abandoned houses were allocated to families of the war wounded freedom fighters and martyred. But there is no set rules for allocating abandoned houses to general freedom fighters,” the minister said this in the Jatiya Sangsad on Thursday while replying to a question from treasury bench member Selina Begum.
Replying to another question from treasury bench member Habibur Rahman Mollah, the minister said the government is going to undertake a coordinated initiative to recover the river banks around Dhaka city where illegal structures and residential projects have been established.
He informed the House that Rajdhani Unnayan Katripakhha (RAJUK) in the light of existing laws has issued notices against 33 organisations for resisting illegal residential projects. “The RAJUK also filed cases against 22 organisations and lodged general diary against three organisations,” he said.
Mosharraf said coordinated efforts among RAJUK, Environment Department, BIWTA, the district administration and WASA are needed for stopping filling of swamps.
