World Health Day observed: 64 lakh people turn poor due to healthcare cost

Health experts on Saturday said that about 64 lakh people are turning poor annually in the country due to increased expenditure on their medical treatment.
“Health-related expenditure is higher in our country compared with other countries of South Asia. Budgetary allocation in the health sector is also lesser in our country. People of Bangladesh spend 67 percent of total health cost, which is a huge financial burden for them,” the experts said it while addressing a seminar titled ‘Universal Health Coverage’ at VIP lounge of National Press Club.
Public Health Foundation Bangladesh (PHFB) organized the seminar marking the World Health Day.
They called for more investment in the health sector, making quality health service for all the people.
The experts demanded implementation of Goal-3 of SDGs, with a target to achieve universal health coverage.
Besides, they called for providing proper health services to Rohingya refugees, as any health problem faced by them may create negative health impacts on local people.  
Dr. Aftab Uddin Ahmed, Head of the Training Division of ICDDR,B, chaired the function. It was moderated by Prof. Dr. Muzaherul Huq, former Regional Advisor of World Health Organization (South East region).  
Prof. Dr. Be-Nazir Ahmed, former Director of Disease Control, Directorate of Health, Professor Dr. Sharmeen Yasmin, Vice-Chairperson of PHFB, Dr. MSA Mansur Ahmed, Professor of Public Health Department, Daffodil International University, Dr. Samir Kumar Saha, Executive Director of PHFB, spoke on the occasion.  
Dr. M Islam Bulbul, DPM (NNS) of Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, presented the keynote paper.
Other government and non-government organizations also observed the day through different programmes.
