At least 63 percent students of 34 public universities are suffering from residential crisis. As a result, they are deprived of normal academic atmosphere.
According to the 42nd Annual Report published by the University Grants Commission (UGC) as many as 90,462 students out of 2,44,363 students live in halls. Of them 56,835 are males and 33,627 are females.
UGC Chairman Professor Abdul Mannan admitted of the accommodation crisis at public universities.
“We know all about the residential crisis in public universities. But we have nothing to do, unless the government sanctions sufficient money to build more and more halls. The UGC has drawn the attention of the government as well as the Education Minister in this respect,” he said.
A total of 23,114 students (15,279 males and 7,835 females) out of 31,955 students
are getting residential facilities in 23 halls of Dhaka University, 7,976 students out of 34,16 getting residential facilities in 18 halls of Rajshahi University, 5,172 students out of 6,264 getting residential facilities at 13 halls of Bangladesh Agricultural University, 3,172 students out of 10,644 getting residential facilities in nine halls of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), 4,461 students out of 24,326 getting residential facilities in 12 halls of Chittagong University, 11,578 students out of 14,981 getting residential facilities in 14 halls of Jahangirnagar University, 3,378 students out of 12,330 getting residential facilities in seven halls of Islamic University, 2,214 students out of 8,593 getting residential facilities in five halls of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology, 1,468 students out of 5,482 getting residential facilities in four halls of Khulna University, 277 students out of 2,017 getting facilities in one hall of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University, 1813 students out of 6208 getting facilities in six halls of Haji Danesh Science and Technology University, 596 students out of 4,763 getting facilities in five halls of Maulana Bhashani Science and Technology University, 3,195 students out of 3407 getting facilities in eight halls of Patuakhali Science and Technology University, 3,087 students out of 3306 getting facilities in five halls of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, 2,535 students out of 3,437 getting facilities in five halls of Chittagong Engineering and Technology University, 1763 students out of 3188 getting facilities in six halls of Rajshahi Engineering and Technology University, 3,117 students out of 3752 of getting facilities in seven halls of Khulna Engineering and Technology University, 1,158 students out of 2,757 getting facilities in six halls of Dhaka Engineering and Technology University, 1,030 students out of 3,792 getting facilities in two halls of Noakhali Science and Technology University, 910 students out of 4,639 getting facilities in four halls of Comilla University, 420 students out of 3,865 getting facilities in two halls of Jatiya Kabi Nazrul Islam University, 558 students out of 1,200 getting facilities in four halls of Chittagong Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, 1,080 students out of 2,458 getting facilities in six halls of Sylhet Agricultural University, 1,000 students out of 2,214 getting facilities in two halls of Jessore Science and Technology University, 173 students out of 2,993 getting facilities in three halls of Bangladesh University of Professionals, 1,136 students out of 8,201 getting facilities in three halls of Begum Rokeya University, 697 students out of 2,448 getting facilities in two halls of Pabna Science and Technology University, 1,006 students out of 3,502 of getting facilities in three halls Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Science and Technology University, 710 students out of 1,675 getting facilities in three halls of Bangladesh Textile University, and 75 students out of 86 of getting facilities in two halls of Rangamati Science and Technology University.
The cent percent students of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University (BSMRAU) are amusing residential facilities. There are 1,133 students there.
No residential facilities are at Jagannath University, Barisal University, National University, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Maritime University, Islamic Arabic University and Bangladesh Open University.
A total of 19,011 students are studying at Jagannath University, 4,527 students at Barisal University, 20,73,069 students at National University, 20,7,829 students at Bangladesh Open University, 59,8,031 students at Islamic Arabic University and 48 students at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Maritime University.
