Bangladesh earned a total US Dollar 630.24 million, up by 110.27 percent over the target, from exporting fish and fish products in 2013-14 fiscal year, Fisheries and Livestock Minister Mohammad Sayedul Haque said here Tuesday.
Replying to a question from treasury bench member M Abdul Latif (Chittagong-11), he said Bangladesh exports frozen shrimp, fish and fish products to different countries. Export Promotion Bureau’s target of frozen food exports in 2013-14 was $578.77 million.
Responding to another question from Awami League lawmaker Nurunnabi Chowdhury (Bhola-3), the minister said according to the Animal Resources Department, there are 2.34 crore cows, 14.57 lakh buffaloes, 32.06 thousand lambs and 2.54 crore goats in the country.
Sayedul Haque said the activities like providing training and transfer of technologies by the Animal Resources Department to the rural poor farmers, distressed women, unemployed youths, Freedom Fighters and their offspring and the marginal farmers are underway.
“It is playing a supportive role in setting up small livestock and poultry farms,” he said.
