Teachers, Students and staffs of the Rajshahi University (RU) yesterday celebrated the university’s 62nd founding anniversary amid great enthusiasm and festivity vowing to establish a violent-free campus.
Prof Muhammad Mizanuddin, the university vice chancellor inaugurated the programmes at 10:00am in front of the administrative building by hoisting the university flag along with national flag.
Later a colourful procession with banners and festoons was brought out on the campus led by the vice chancellor at 10:30am while more than a thousand students, teachers and staff took part in that procession.
All the buildings of the university were decorated with colorful lights, and the flag flew atop them.
Later, addressing at a discussion at the university senate bhabon, the speakers vowed to establish a violent free campus and establishing the university as a model for the whole world. RU VC Prof Muhammad Mizanuddin vowed to resist violent politics on the campus to run the university’s research and other academic activities smoothly.
He recalled the outstanding sacrifice of Prof Shamsuzzoha for the democratic movement of Bangladesh, who was shot dead in 1969 by oppressive rulers of Pakistan. He also emphasised upholding the tradition of the university and urged the students to play a greater role in promoting the spirit of the Liberation War and free thinking.
Among others, RU pro-VC Prof Chowdhury Sarwar Jahan, treasurer Prof Sayen Uddin, registrar Prof Entajul Haque, students’ adviser Prof Sadequl Arefin Matin, public relation administrator Prof Elias Hossain addressed the discussion programme.
RU started its journey on July 6, 1953 with six departments under three faculties with only 161 students and 68 teachers with Prof Itrat Hossain Zuberi as the founder VC.
Now it has about 33,000 students and 1,200 teachers in 50 departments under nine faculties, five research institutes, and 17 residential halls.
