6,234 hects brought under maize cultivation in Jamalpur

Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) has taken up a massive plan to cultivate maize in seven upazilas of the district during the season. DAE sources said a total 6,234 hectares of land was brought under maize cultivation in the area this year with the production target of 44,261 tonnes of maize.
Upazila wise break up of land is as follows: 30 hectares in Sadar, 315 hectares in Sarishabari, 34 hectares in Melandah, 1,030 hectares in Islampur, 4,500 hectares in Dewanganj, 25 hectares in Madarganj and 300 hectares in Bakshiganj upazila.
DAE sources said, farmers in the char areas have cultivated maize on an extensive land in Dewanganj, Islampur and Bakshiganj upazilas as the soils of the areas are suitable for maize cultivation. Besides farmers got fair price of maize last year which encourage farmers to bring more land under the maize cultivation this year.
Deputy Director of DAE Dr M Rafiqul Islam said soils in the char areas are fertile for maize cultivation. On the other hand farmers got fair price and marketing facilities of their products.
He said, many food companies purchased maize form the farmers which encourage farmers in maize cultivation. Besides, multipurpose use of maize also increased local demand, he added.
