As many as 61 candidates will vie for the posts of chairman, vice-chairman and woman vice-chairman in the elections to Rangpur Sadar, Gangachara, Kaunia and Pirgachha upazila parishads scheduled for May 19.
Of them, 24 are contesting for chairman post, 21 for four vice-chairmen posts and 16 for woman vice-chairman posts in the upazilas, district election office sources said.
In Rangpur Sadar upazila, six candidates are contesting for chairman, six for vice chairman and three for woman vice chairmen posts.
Five people are in the race for chairman post, three for vice-chairman post and three for vice chairmen post reserved for women in Kaunia upazila.
In Pirgachha upazila , three will vie for the post of chairman, three for vice chairman and four for female vice chairmen posts.
Nine candidates are contesting for chairman post, nine for vice chairman post and seven for woman vice chairmen post at Gangachara upazila.
Saturday was the last day for withdrawal of nomination papers.
According to election officer Md Ashraful Islam, chairman candidates Abdul Gani, Masudur Rahman and Mahbub Chawdhury of Rangpur Sadar, Abdur Rauf and Nuruzzaman Kazol of Gangachara, Selina Begum and Rezwanul Haque Bablu of Pirgachha, and Abdul Halim Suruj of Kaunia upazilas withdrew their nomination papers on the last day.
