600 Mobarakganj Sugar Mills employees deprived of salary before Eid

The joy of Eid turned bitter to 600 employees of Mobarakganj Sugar Mills Limited of Kaliganj in Jhenaidah as the authority failed to ensure the salary of the employees before Eid- ul- Fitr.
Meanwhile the authorities said, they could arrange the payment as the bank remain closed before maturity of the previous month.
Although about 8,000 tones of sugar produced in two seasons for Taka 45 crore has been lying in the stores of the mills damaging faster.
Vendors have been incurring double benefits by selling the sugar of the mills when the price was almost double in the market.
The 48- year old sugar mills, the largest heavy industry in Jhenaidah is bearing the responsibilities as well as liabilities on its head for Tks 125 crore to banks and other institutes leading the mills closure at any moment due to alleged corruption by a section of influential employees and officials of the mills, suspected some of the leaders and concern citizens in the district.
Some of the employees said, the mills produced 4,235 tones of sugar was produced as against the targeted 5,921 tones during 2014-15 crushing season. During the last crushing season in 2015-16 the mills produced 4,125 tones as against the target for 4,120 tones.
Some locals and employees of the mills said, the dealers appointed by Bangladesh Sugar and Food Industries Corporation (BSFIC) were not interested to withdraw the sugar from the mills for past couple of years as the price of the sugar produced by private companies was less than the BSFIC produced ones.
But they dealers have been showing their eagerness now a days when the price enhanced to Tk s 70 or more in the market. But they (dealers) have been purchasing the same at Tk 48 to 50 from the mills gate, while selling at Tk 65 to 66 depriving the customers in the mills zones.
At least 8,000 tones of sugar produced in two seasons for Tk 45 crore are dumped in the stores of the mills for years and damaging there due to lack of maintenance, they said.
Mobarakganj Sugar Mills Ltd MD Delwar Hossain when contacted said, they could not ensure salary of the mills employees by June as the banks were closed due to Eid-ul -Fitr holiday. Further, as per the standing order of the corporation, they can not pay the salary when the month was not over.
Following the storage of huge sugar in the mills stores, the managing director said, they usually store a certain quantity of sugar in the stores to ensure balance of sugar prices in the market. The salaries might be paid within two or three days, MD said.
