UNB, Dhaka :
The $600-million Rural Electricity Transmission and Distribution project, approved by the World Bank Board in February 2014, will reduce system loss in rural grid electricity system as only about 42 percent of Bangladesh’s rural households have access to grid electricity.
The project will support new lines and substations as well as upgrade the existing lines in rural areas of Dhaka, Chittagong and Sylhet Divisions, said a World Bank release on Sunday.
The project has already identified the locations for the 33/11kV substations and started to purchase the land for the substations. The preparation of technical specifications for procurement of these sub-stations is underway. The procurement of line materials is also underway.
The WB release said the project will enhance the distribution network capacity to make the lines ready for carrying additional electricity when power generation will increase in the country.
The project will also support Power Grid Company of Bangladesh (PGCB) to enhance transmission network.
The release said that only about 42 percent of rural households in Bangladesh have access to grid electricity, and even these consumers suffer frequent and prolonged power cuts.
The World Bank is supporting the government to reduce system losses and improve the distribution network of electricity in rural areas.
Over the years, the government has taken steps to reduce system loss and increase power generation capacity.
