Wildlife Crime Control Unit (WCCU) of the Bangladesh Forest Department on Thursday seized more than 600 birds of different species from Zirabo area of Savar, on the outskirts of Dhaka.
On information, a WCCU team arrested one Lal Mia when he got down from a Dhaka bound bus along with bird cages at Zirabo Bus Stand around 2am, WCCU sources said.
Thereafter, a mobile court led by Magistrate Sarwar Alam sentenced him to one year imprisonment for violating Wildlife (Conservation and Security) Act, 2012.
Lal Mia brought the birds that included Alexandrian Parakeet, Rose Ringed Parakeet, Hill Myna, Munia and sparrows from Bogra, the sources said.
The Forest Department freed the birds from the Curzon Hall premises of Dhaka University.
Lal Miah and his group used to supply birds to the bird sellers and pet shops in Dhaka.
Earlier, a mobile court jailed Lal Miah for one year after he was arrested from Tongi with 700 birds.
