The Speedy Trial Tribunal-1 of Dhaka on Sunday sentenced six persons to death in a case lodged over murder of retired school teacher Anil Kumar Das of Tangail and his wife Kalpana Rani Das in 2017.
Judge Abu Jafar Md Kamruzzaman of the speedy trial court gave the verdict in presence of the convicts on Sunday. The death-row-convicts are- Swapan Kumar Das, Jahidul Islam, Farhad, Moniruzzaman Bhuiyan, Manjurul Islam and Shoyan Miah.
The court also sentenced them to seven-year imprisonment and fined Taka 50 thousand each, in default the convicts would suffer one more year in the prison, for hiding the bodies of the victims. According to the case documents, victim Anil’s step brother Swapan hatched a plot to kill his brother and sister-in-law for occupying their properties and killed them with the help of the others on July 26, 2017, in their Rosulpur house in Tangail.
The convicts put the bodies of the victims in separate sacs and threw in the septic tank of their toilet. Later police recovered the bodies.
Anil’s son Nirmal Kumar Das filed the case with Tangail Sadar Police Station. Police on September 17, 2018, filed charge-sheet of the case against the six accused. The court on August 7, 2019, framed charges of the case and the judge came up with the verdict on Sunday. Earlier, he recorded the depositions of 27 witnesses on different dates to give the verdict.
