Six suspected robbers were killed in separate incidents of ‘gunfights’ in Pabna and Faridpur districts early Friday.
In Pabna, four alleged robbers were killed and three others injured in a reported gun battle between their cohorts and Rapid Action Battalion members at Joynagar in Ishwardi upazila. The deceased were identified as Badshah Miah, Shafiqul Islam, Manjurul Islam and Rustom Ali.
Tipped off that 15-20 robbers were committing robbery at Badshah Rice Mill, a team of RAB-12 conducted a drive in the area around 3 am, said Bina Rani Das, company commander of RAB-12.
Sensing presence of the elite force, the robbers opened fire on them, prompting
the Rab members to fire back, triggering a gunfight. Two robbers were killed and five others injured in the gunfight while the others managed to flee. Later, the elite force recovered the bodies and arrested five injured robbers with the help of local people.
Among the injured robbers, one died on way to Pabna General Hospital while another died at the hospital.
Police recovered one rice-laden truck and three firearms from the spot. The injured were identified as Bachchu Miah, 35, hailing from Mymensingh district, Mehedi Hasan, 25, hailing from Panchagarh district, and Hanif Miah, 25, hailing from Chandpur district.
In Faridpur, two suspected robbers were killed in a gunfight between two robber gangs at Sattarkandi village in Madhukhali upazila early Friday. The deceased were identified as Saiful Islam Zoardar, 29, son of Kamal Uddin of Mesordia village in the upazila, and Sazzad alias Abul Kashem, 40, son of Ijom Sheikh of Baliakandi upazila in Rajbari district. Informed that two robber gangs were exchanging gunfire, a police team went to the spot around 1 am and recovered the bullet-hit bodies of the duo, said officer-in-charge of Madhukhali Police Station Ruhul Amin. The bodies were sent to Faridpur Medical College Hospital for autopsy.
Meanwhile, police arrested six people from the area for their suspicious involvement and recovered two firearms, some bullets and three sharp weapons from the spot.
