Six police constables of Chattogram Metropolitan Police (CMP) have been arrested in a case filed for allegedly extorting money from a contractor after picking him up from his house in Anwara upazila of Chattogram.
The arrested constables are: Md Abdul Nabi, Md Eskandar Hossain, Md Monirul Islam, Md Shakil Khan, Md Masud and Morshed Billah, our Chattogram correspondent reports quoting police.
The incident happened at Safi Talukdar Bari under ward no 8 of Boirag union around 2:00 am on February 4 but the matter came to light after the victim lodged a complaint to police yesterday.
SM Rashidul Haque, superintendent of Chattogram police, said, “Six constables were arrested after a case was lodged with Anwara Police Station on Sunday in this regard.”
The SP, however, refused to disclose the details.According to the case statement, the plainclothes men entered the house of contractor Abdul Mannan, identifying themselves as members of Detective Branch (DB) of police and detained him.
Eight men, including six constables, on four motorcycles took him to “Koigram Rastar Matha” area under Paitya upazila, said the statement.
They threatened to kill him and demanded Tk 10 lakh, said the statement.
Mannan phoned his relatives and arranged Tk 1.80 lakh. They later released him and fled the scene, added the statement.
Talking to our correspondent, CMP Commissioner Saleh Mohammed Tanvir said, “They (constables) were suspended following the incident. A departmental case will be filed in this regard.”
“No one will be spared if they’re involved in criminal activities,” said the CMP chief.
Earlier on December 25 last year, two policemen of Sitakunda Model Police Station were arrested on charge of mugging Tk 2.80 lakh from a driver, introducing themselves as “members of the Detective Branch” at Sitakunda upazila of Chattogram. later they were suspended in this connection.
