6 killed in ‘gunfights’

Six persons, including two Rohingyas, were killed in separate “gunfights” with law enforcement in Cox’s Bazar, Dhaka and Gazipur district on Tuesday night.
In Cox’s Bazar, two Rohingyas were killed in a reported gunfight with Border Guards Bangladesh (BGB) in Kharangkhali area under Teknaf upazila, around 4:30am.
Teknaf BGB-2 Battalion Acting Commander Shariful Islam Jomadder said, “A patrol team encountered two Rohingyas when they were trying to trespass into
 Bangladesh’s territory from Myanmar through the Kharangkhali-Naf River border. The trespassers opened fire on the BGB team who tried to stop them from entering the territory. In retaliation, BGB officials fired back, leaving the Rohingyas dead.”
“Some 190,000 yaba pills were recovered from the spot and the bodies were sent to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy, the BGB official said.
In another incident, two suspects were killed in a “gunfight” with members of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) in Mognama area under Pekua upazila of the district around 5:00am.
RAB recovered eight firearms and 26 bullets from the spot, said RAB’s Cox’s Bazar Company commander Major Mehedi Hasan.
In Dhaka, a fugitive criminal from Narsingdi was killed in a reported gunfight with RAB in West Matikata Dhaka.
The deceased, Shafiqul, 30, was wanted in a number of cases, including murder, said RAB-11 Commanding Officer Lt Col Kazi Shamsher Uddin.
“Acting on a tip-off, a team of the elite force raided a high-rise building around 11:40pm on Tuesday. “Shafiqul and his two accomplices opened fire on the team as soon as they reached the spot,” the RAB offcials said.
In Gazipur, a suspected mugger was killed in an alleged gunfight with police at Ershadnagar Bashpotti in Tongi.
The deceased is Kawsar Mia, 28, son of Mintu Mia of the area. Police said Kawsar was accused in several criminal cases, said Tongi East police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Kamal Hossain.
 “The deceased was accused in multiple cases filed with different police stations,” said.
