Police have arrested six leaders and activists of Jamaat-e-Islami over the murder of ruling Awami League MP Manjurul Islam Liton at his home in Gaibandha.
Sundarganj Police Station OC Atiur Rahman said they were arrested from different locations of the district Friday night. Police produced them before the court of Gaibandha’s Judicial Magistrate Zainal Abedin and sought seven days to quiz them in custody. The hearing of the remand
petition will be held on Sunday, the OC said. The arrested persons have been identified as Md Farid Mia, 70, Samiul Islam, 32, Hadisur Rahman, 30, Ziaur Rahman, 32, Hazrat Ali, 44, and Nabinur Khandaker. Among the arrestees, Farid Mia is a financier of the Jamaat while the others are involved with the party, Inspector Abu Haider Md Ashrafuzzaman said.
MP Liton was shot dead at his home at Shahbaz in Sundarganj on Dec 31. Witnesses said five persons took part in the killing mission. Ruling Awami League leaders, including its chief Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, have been blaming the Jamaat for the murder. Liton’s sister has filed a case mentioning ‘unidentified persons’ as killers. Police have so far detained 45 people for questioning in the case.
Twenty-seven of them have been sent to jail in other cases and under Section 54 of the Bangladesh Penal Code, which allows police to arrest without warrant. The others have been freed.
