6 held with fake currency notes worth Tk 51 lakh

Detectives have arrested six members of a currency counterfeiting gang and seized fake notes worth Tk 51 lakh from their possession at Turag in the city.
A team of Detective Branch (North Division) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) raided an apartment on the seventh floor of a building on the Badaldi Road in the Baunia area of Turag yesterday afternoon and arrested them, said Sumon Kanti Chowdhury, Senior Assistant Commissioner of DB North of DMP. They were identified are Md Abul Hossain alias Imon, 35, Sheikh Sumon, 32, Md Sagir Hossain alias Shaheen, 42, Md Iqbal Hossain, 32, Swapna, 19, and Touquir Ahmed alias Sujon, 30.
The law enforcers also recovered authentic currency notes worth Tk 29,800, a laptop, two colour printers, paper and ink used for printing counterfeit notes, and foil papers used in currency notes, he said.
The detectives claimed that the arrested used to print fake notes and sell those on the occasion of different festivals in Dhaka, Chattogram, Gazipur, Narsingdi, and different remote areas in the country.
They were planning to release fake notes of around Tk 4-5 crore ahead of the upcoming general elections, the law enforcers added.
A case has been filed against the six persons in this connection with Turag Police Station.
