A special court of Chittagong in a verdict on Sunday sentenced six persons for seven years Rigorous Imprisonment (RI) each for looting gold ornaments from a Jewellery shop in city’s Halishahor area in 2002.
Chittagong Divisional Special Judge Mir Ruhul Amin delivered the judgment convicting Saiful Islam, Mohammad Faridul Alam, Akter Hossain, Mohammad Alamgir, Mohammad Faruk and Mohammad Shahjahan, hailed from different areas in the port city. The court also fined Taka 5,000 each in default they will suffer one year more RI.
The court, however, acquitted four persons from the charges brought against them for not proving allegations.
The prosecution story, in brief, is that a group of arms dacoits looted 200 tolas of gold ornaments at gun points from Sandwip JKB Jewellryes at Halishahor, A block, under Halishahor thana in the city on September 25 in 2002. Later, victim Jewellery owner Gopal Ranjon Bhomik filed a case with Halishahor police station against unidentified 10/12 persons in this connection.
Police submitted charge sheet on December 31 in 2003 while the court framed charges on September 14 in 2004.
The court examined a total of eight prosecution witnesses out of 20 and declared the verdict, court sources said.
The convicted persons are on run after taking bail.
