6 bridges on Fanai River vulnerable in Kulaura

Some six rural road bridges built on Fanai River flowing through Dakshinanchal of Kulaura upazila of Moulvibazar have broken after re-excavation of the river. Around 40 thousand people from 4 unions have been risking their lives for almost one and a half years. LGED authorities say that these bridges will be given by the Water Development Board for the unplanned re-dredging of the river.

It has been found that about Tk 30 lakh had been spent on the Fanai river in the 1997-98 financial year under the initiative of the Local Government Engineering Department (LGED).
A bridge was constructed on the Hasimpur-Laxmipur Road of the upazila, one on the Mukundapur-Kabiraji Road, and one on the Gutguti-Kabiraji Road. Besides, under the Annual Development Programme (ADB), the upazila project office spent about Tk 33 lakh on Bhabanipur-Helapur Road in 2018-19 financial year and Tk22 lakh in 2011-12 financial year.
Mukundapur-Palgram Road was also constructed. During the fiscal year 2021-’22, Paubo re-excavated about 40 km of Fanai River with excavators at a cost of about Tk 17 cr. Before the work was completed, heavy rain poured down from the hill. Then the space between these bridges can be given and the two sides of the connecting road.
Going to the ground, it is known that CNG-powered passenger auto-rickshaws and motorcycles are plying through the dangerous bridge. It can be seen that out of 6 bridges, 2 bridges were broken a year ago. Hasimpur Lakshipur Road day by day LGED sign boards and red flags are hanging. Seeing this, people and vehicles are moving at the risk of life, and Kajal Miar on Bhavanipur-Nartan road .There is a condition of the bridge near the house. The bridge built on the Mukundpur-Palgram Road after the last 5 months has collapsed and the bridge is going to give way completely. Local residents said that it was a mistake to build this bridge over this river. It was necessary to build a bigger bridge over this river. The bridges have given way since the re-dredging of the river. Cross three bridges on foot.
Kulaura Upazila Project Implementation Officer Shimul Ali said that the two bridges built under ADB now have no chance to be renovated. May be re-allocated if re-allocated. Rautgaon Union Chairman Akbar Ali Sohag said I have sent the list of dangerous bridges.

Md. Aktaruzzaman, Executive Engineer of Paubo Moulvibazar office, said that the re-excavation work has been done according to the measurement of the river. The bridge was built a long time ago. At that time the authorities concerned did not take into account the measurement of the river. As a result, this condition of the bridge happened.
