Six activists of the Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) have confessed their involvement in a robbery of Tk 3.7 million in Sutrapur area of Dhaka on 19 February this year.
The BCL men gave the confessional statement recently in a Dhaka court under Article 164.
The accused are Abul Hassan Mithu, Dewan Nasir Uddin aka Sohag, Tariqul Islam aka Tagor, Awlad Hossain, Maksud and Rabin, residents of Sutrapur, Lakkhibazar and Bangshal area.
According to the deposition of the accused, Sutrapur Police Station Sub-Inspector Nazmul Hossain said, Dewan Nasir Uddin was associated with Dhaka city south unit’s Chhatra League politics. He is now suspended.
The police said they have already recovered nearly Tk 300,000 from their possession.
Police recovered Tk 120,000 from Nasir, Tk 100,000 from Abul Hassan, Tk 15,000 from Awlad, Tk 30,000 from Maksud and Tk 6,500 from Tariqul.
A young gold businessman of Comilla, Bidhan Chandra Dutta, and his friend Bidhu Mitra were going to Rajdhani Market in the city from Tantibazar area after selling gold there.
When they reached Kunja Babu Lane of Sutrapur, all on a sudden, 14-15 people stopped them and took them to a nearby old house. The robbers took Tk 3.750 million from them along with their mobile phone sets.
Bidhan Chandra Dutta filed a robbery case with the Sutrapur police station.
The police claimed that the robbers were identified from video footage of the robbery.
Bidhan Chandra said the robbers snatched the money threatening them to kill.
“I can’t believe I would be robbed in broad daylight,” Bidhan added.
The police said Nasir Uddin was arrested just in two days after the case was filed with the Sutrapur police station. On February 21, Nasir’s deposition in the court revealed the names of the BCL activists, including Abul Hassan Mithun.
Police later arrested Mithun and Robin and produced them in the court seeking remand as they did not confess their involvement in the incident. They are now in police custody.
As police found no trace of the robbed money from Mithun and Robin, police sought two-day remand for other suspects – Tariqul, Awlad Hossain and Maksud. Meanwhile, Awlad Hossain confessed his involvement in the robbery.
Investigation officials said Sohag and Awlad disclosed that Alauddin, who is a hundi-businessman in Comilla, as well as Shafiqul and Mahbub Sumon were also involved in the robbery.
SI Nazmul said, Shafiqul and Mahmub Sumon are activists of Swechchhasebak League.
