The ruling Awami League on Monday said the fifth phase of upazila elections were held in a peaceful manner following necessary measures taken by the Election Commission (EC). AL Joint General Secretary Jahangir Kabir Nanak made the statement at a press conference in the afternoon on the day at the party president’s Dhanmondi office in the city. Responding to a query about BNP’s allegation that the EC has failed to hold fair election, Nanak said that the EC has successfully conducted the polls and the government has duly cooperated to it. “There is no scope to raise question about the Election Commission as all elections that were held under the incumbent commission were free, fair and neutral,,” he said. He also came up with a reply to a BNP protest against acting chief election commissioner Abdul Mobarak’s comment that the BNP chief Khaleda Zia is rubbing her nose in the dirt by participating in the upazila election. Nanak said, “Though the election commissioner holds a constitutional post, he is not an isolated person. His comment is a reflection of countrymen’s feelings.”He urged the BNP to return to the path of democracy shunning the way of conflicts for the sake of the country’s development and stability.
