The 5th day of the hartal, enforced by BNP-led 20-party alliance, was almost ignored by the people of Chittagong on Thursday.
 Members of the law enforcement agencies maintained a strong security vigil during the hartal period.
BNP along with its alliance enforced the countrywide 72 hours hartal in the first time from Sunday and extended it 36 hours more till 6 am yesterday. Chittagong Metropolitan and District police control room sources said there was no report of any untoward incident from any part of the city and district during the hartal hours. Police and witnesses said that there were hardly any picketing and procession during the shutdown.
Chittagong city and district police in a series of drives detained 23 activists of BNP-Jamaat-Shibir from various places of city and different Upazilas of the district on Wednesday and Thursday night.
Eight persons injured when hartal supporters hurled petrol bomb on a passenger bus at Polo Ground area at 12 am Wednesday night. Among the injured persons three were admitted to Chittagong Medical College Hospital with burn injury and rest injured persons released from the hospital after treatment . Police and eye-witnesses said the hartal situation in the city and district was almost normal as a good number of vehicles mostly commuters’ services were seen plying on the city streets ignoring the hartal.
Besides, a good number of buses and heavy vehicles on the long distance routes plied with police escort during the hartal while most of the road side shops and markets were opened during the hartal hours on Thursday. Though academic activities in the educational institutions remained closed, attendance in the government and private offices was as usual.
Bangladesh Awami League (AL) and its front organizations dominated almost all the city streets by holding street rallies and bringing out processions.
