The 5th Convocation of Eastern University (EU) was held at International Convention City Bashundhara in the capital on Sunday. The ceremony was marked with deep appreciation from teachers, parents, and friends, high motivation by the Convocation Speaker, catching eye of the corporate sector, patronage by the Chancellor and best wishes for the future.
Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid, MP, presided over the ceremony on behalf of the President and Chancellor of the universities. Canadian High Commissioner Benoît-Pierre Laramée graced the occasion as convocation speaker. Prof Dr Abdur Rab, the Vice Chancellor of EU conveyed the welcome speech. Prof Abdul Mannan, Chairman, University Grants Commission of Bangladesh (UGC) and Md. Azizul Islam, Chairman, Board of Trustees, Eastern University also spoke on the occasion.
In total 1901 students from four different Faculties were awarded with certificates in the ceremony and among them, 2 students received Chancellor’s Gold Medal, 3 students received Chairman’s Gold Medal and 4 students received Vice Chancellor’s Gold Medal.
The Education Minister congratulated the graduates and EU authority on this grand occasion. He mentioned that government does not discriminate between private and public university. He also mentioned that the universities which do not fulfill the minimum requirements of the Private University Act, are under close monitoring by the government. He urged the graduates to take the lead of tomorrow’s Bangladesh.
The Chairman of UGC emphasized the graduates not to stop the process of learning throughout their lives. He hoped the strategies and initiatives adapted to make Eastern University one of the best in Bangladesh in terms of quality education.
The Convocation Speaker Benoît-Pierre Laramée congratulated the young graduates and wished them a happy, prosperous and long life. He said – “My fellow graduates, make the world before you a better one by going into it with all boldness. You are up to it and you are fit for it; you deserve it and if you make your own best contribution, the world before you will become a bit more deserving of you.” He spoke about evolution of education from the time immemorial and urged the graduates to develop their humanity in the light of education and increase their productivity. He also commented on the contemporary education policies and education systems.
EU Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Abdur Rab in his inaugural speech congratulated the graduates and their parents; he advised them to use their knowledge and skills in their work environment and in personal, family and social life and to fight against corruption. He said that EU had started its journey of knowledge in 2003 and today it has made a name for itself because of its groundbreaking research and quality education. He said it was quite challenging to transform EU into such a position but now this has been done and next they would be working towards internalization. He termed EU students as ‘global graduates’. He thanked the honorable Education Minister, the Chairman of UGC, the Convocation Speaker, EU family members and other distinguished guests for their sincere efforts to make the ceremony a success despite many constraints.

Azizul Islam thanked the students and guardians for putting their trust and confidence in EU authority and said “From the very beginning, EU has been maintaining quality in teaching.” Among others, members of the Board of Trustees of Eastern University, faculty members, officials and staff, media personnel and other distinguished guest were present at the convocation ceremony.
The day-long ceremony ended with a vote of thanks by Prof. Dr. Abdul Hannan Chowdhury, Pro-Vice Chancellor of EU and finally a colorful cultural show performed by EU students and Warfaze.
