The district administration has started distribution process of 4,229.15 tonnes rice under Vulnerable Group Feeding (VGF) Programme to assist the poor of the district in celebrating the Eid-ul-Fitr festivity.
The Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief has allocated the rice for distribution among four lakh 22 thousand and 915 poor and distressed families in all eight upazilas and three pourashabhas in the district, sources in the district administration said.
“The concerned upazila administrations with assistance of local public representatives and union level committees have been preparing to distribute the rice among the listed VGF card holder families,” said District Relief and Rehabilitation Officer (DRRO) Md Faridul Haque.
“Each of the selected beneficiary families will get 10 kg VGF rice in all 77 unions under eight upazilas and three pourashabhas in the district where the distribution process will be completed before the Eid-ul-Fitr festivity,” he added.
Under the programme, 268.65 tonnes of rice will be distributed among 26,865 VGF card holder families in Sadar upazila, 891.01 tonnes among 89,101 families in Mithapukur, 677.50 tonnes among 67,750 families in Pirganj and 547.03 tonnes among 54,703 families in Pirgachha upazila.
Besides, 448.54 tonnes of VGF rice will be distributed among 44,854 families in Kawnia, 505.58 tonnes among 50,558 families in Gangachara, 556.24 tone among 55,624 families in Badarganj and 272,99 tonnes among 27,299 families in Taraganj upazilas.
In addition to this, 30.81 tonnes of VGF rice will be distributed among 3,081 poor and distressed families in Badarganj pourasabha and 15.40 tonnes of rice will be distributed among 1,540 families each in Haragachh and Pirganj pourashabhas.
Deputy Commissioner Muhammad Wahiduzzaman said necessary steps have been taken to complete distribution of the allocated special VGF rice timely among the card holder families to assist them in celebrating the upcoming Eid-ul-Fitr festivity.
BSS from Gaibandha adds: The government has allocated 1,640 of rice for the distressed and ultra poor of the district on the occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr under Vulnerable Group Feeding (VGF) programme.
District relief and rehabilitation office source said the rice would be distributed to a total of 1,64,035 VGF card holders of all the seven upazilas and three pourashavas in the district before Eid-ul-Fitr.
Of the total, 26,814 cards were allocated for Fulchhari Upazila, 28,899 for Sundarganj Upazila, 15,160 for Shaghata Upazila, 28,252 for Gobindaganj Upazila, 15,762 for Sadullapur Upazila, 23,752 for Sadar Upazila and 13,073 for Palashbari Upazila of the district.
Apart from, 4,621 cards were allocated for Gaibandha Pourashava and Gobindaganj Pourashava each and 3,081cards for Sundarganj Pourashava, sources said.
Each of the beneficiaries would get 10 KGs of rice so that they could celebrate the forthcoming Eid-ul-Fitr, one of the biggest religious festivals for the Muslims, without food crisis, said district relief and rehabilitation officer AKM Idris Ali.
Deputy commissioner Goutam Chandra Pal told BSS that instructions were given to the upazila nirbahi officers (UNOs) along with project implementation officers (PIOs) to distribute the rice to the beneficiaries smoothly within very short time.
Sadar UNO Ali Ferdous Zahan and PIO Anisur Rahman said as per the directives of the DC necessary measures were taken to distribute the VGF rice to the beneficiaries of the upazila before Eid festival.
