Fifty-seven members of six pirate gangs in the Sundarbans surrendered to Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal in Khulna on Wednesday morning.
The pirates also handed over 58 foreign and locally made guns and huge cache of ammunition (1284 rounds of bullet) to the
home minister at a RAB-6 headquarters programme.
Among the pirates, six gang leaders are Dada Bhai alias Razon, Ameer Ali, Hannan, Munna, Shamsu alias Chhoto Shamsu and Surja.
Fifteen members of Dada Bhai Bahini, nine of Hannan Bahini, seven of Ameer Ali Bahini, ten of Surja Bahini, nine of Shamsu Bahini and seven of Munna Bahini surrendered.
In the programme, the home minister said no bandit would be left free to commit robbery.
The government will rehabilitate the robbers who want to surrender and return to a normal life, he said.
Fisheries and Live Stock Minister Naryan Chandra, KCC Mayor Talukder Abdul Khaleque, Abu Sayeed Al Mahmud Swapon MP, Chairman of Home Ministry standing committee Dr. Mozammel Haque, Director General of RAB Benazir Ahmed, DIG of River Police Maruf Hasan, Commandar of RAB-6 Additional DIG Khondokar Rafiqul Islam, Commandar of RAB-8 Additional DIG Atika Islam, Aadditional DIG of Khulna Range Police Habibur Rahman and Khulna Deputy Commissioner Amin-ul-Ahsan, among others, addressed the programme.
Earlier, the Home Minister paid Tk 1 lakh from premier’s relief fund to each of the 57 robbers.
