UNB, Dhaka :
Thirty one missions out of 56 Bangladesh missions abroad failed to achieve their respective export target in the last fiscal year (FY17).
Key Bangladesh missions like the ones in Washington, London, Brussels, Ottawa, Canberra, and Tokyo have failed to achieve their FY17 export targets while some other important missions — Beijing, Copenhagen, Riyadh, Rome, Moscow, The Hague — have been able to reach their targets for the 12-month period.
The overall export earnings for the July-June period of FY17 amounted to $ 34,835.09 million ($34.84 billion) against the strategic target of $ 37,000 million ($37 billion), showing a shortfall of 5.85 percent from the strategic target.
Of the 56 Bangladesh missions, some 25 missions met their respective export targets set for the July-June period of the last fiscal year, according to the latest statistics provided by the Export Promotion Bureau (EPB).
The 25 well-performing missions are in Beijing, Moscow, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, Copenhagen, Kathmandu, Athens, Colombo, Rabat, Baghdad, Bangkok, Vienna, Riyadh, Rome, Warsaw, Beirut, Islamabad, Port Luis, The Hague, Lisbon, Hong Kong, Cairo, Muscat, Manila and Tashkent. Of the 33 missions that could not achieve their targets for the last fiscal year, exports still marked a rise for 6 of them over the corresponding period of the last fiscal (2015-16). These missions are in Paris, Berlin, Madrid, Hanoi, Jakarta and Stockholm. However, 25 missions — London, Tokyo, Tehran, Canberra, Brussels, Ottawa, Yangon, Geneva, New Delhi, Dubai, Washington, Thimphu, Amman, Nairobi, Tripoli, Mexico City, Pretoria, Kuwait, Brasilia, Ankara, Manama, Doha, Male, Darussalam and Seoul — saw exports decline over the corresponding period of the previous Year (2015-16).
The EPB figures revealed that out of the 18 Bangladesh missions having commercial wings, only four have achieved their export targets while 14 others could not achieve their respective targets.
The four missions with commercial wings, which achieved their respective export target, are in Beijing, Moscow, Kuala Lumpur and Singapore.
Although the remaining 14 commercial wings could not achieve the fiscal target, the earnings of three of them still saw increase over the July-June period of 2015-16 fiscal. These are in Paris, Berlin and Madrid.
The export growth of the remaining 11 Commercial Wings — London, Tokyo, Tehran, Canberra, Brussels, Ottawa, Yangon, Geneva, New Delhi, Dubai and Washington — was lower than that of the corresponding period of the previous year. The highest earnings over the last fiscal year, some $ 5,973.51 million, almost one fifth of the total exports were registered by the Berlin mission, followed by some $ 5, 895.12 million by the Washington mission, and London $ 3,731.64 million.
