54,696 flood-hit farmers to get rehab facilities in Rajshahi

Around 54,696 flood-affected farmers will get rehabilitation facilities for recouping their losses in the region.
Of them, each of 9,000 enlisted farmers will get 20 kilograms of seeds, 20 kilograms of DAP and 10 kilograms of MOP fertilizers for wheat farming on at least one bigha of land while each of 9,600 other farmers to get two kilograms of seeds and 20 and 10 kilograms of DAP and MOP respectively for maize farming on one bigha of land.
Deputy Director at the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) here Joynal Abedeen told BSS today that the farmers will be given the support including seeds and fertilizers free of cost so that they can recover their losses caused by recent flood.
He said standing crops on around 94,109 hectares of land were inundated by the flood in Rajshahi, Naogaon, Natore and Chapainawabgonj districts.
With the supports, the farmers are expected to cultivate crops like wheat, maize, summer mug bean and mustard on 7,322 bighas of land in the four flood- affected districts.
Abedeen said DAE has taken up various steps to recover the losses of crops damaged due to recent flood and river erosion in the region.
Steps for farmers’ dev taken
BSS from Rangpur adds: Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Public Administration Ministry HN Ashikur Rahman, MP, has said the government has taken various steps for development of the farmers.
“The present pro-farmer government led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is assisting the peasants in using latest agriculture technologies to increase crop output for enriching national economy with ensuring food security,” he said.
Rahman was addressing the inaugural ceremony of a three-day ‘Fruit Tree Fair-2017’ jointly organised by the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) and upazila administration on Mithapukur upazila parishad premises on Monday afternoon.
Terming farmers as the main drivers for country’s development, he said they (farmers) are working hard to keep wheels of the national economy rotating and Awami League (AL) always thinks about changing fortune of the farmers.
He called upon the farmers for increasing production of all crops and fruits to further boost national economy and ensure food security, meet nutritional demand, alleviate poverty and achieve self-reliance.
Presided over by Upazila Nirbahi Officer Mamun-Ar-Rashid, Upazila Agriculture Officer Khorshed Alam delivered welcome speech at the function.
