UNB, Jessore :
The onrush of water from the upstream and incessant rainfall triggered by active monsoon over the last five days inundated 50 villages in nine unions of Monirampur upazila of the district, leaving about 5,000 families marooned.
Educational institutions, houses and different establishments went under water by the flood, as water of the Harihar, Mukteshwari and Teka rivers is flowing above danger mark.
Meanwhile, the upazila administration has shut 54 educational institutions as those were inundated by floodwater. Thousands of flood-hit people in the upazila are facing scarcity of pure drinking water, food and sanitation. Besides, 1,265 hectres of cropland have been inundated by floodwater due to heavy rain for the last five days.

Shamkur union parishad chairman Moniruzzaman Moni said 3,000 families of 13 villages of the union remained marooned. Of them, 500 families left the houses and took shelter at Nagorghop High School, Nagorghop Primary School, Aminpur Primary School and Chinatola Primary School and both sides of the highway.

Teesta River erosion threatens Chilkhal Govt pry school
Staff Reporter, Rangpur adds: Severe erosion by the river Teesta has posed threat to Chilkhal Government Primary School under Kolkond Union of Gangachara upazila in the district during last one week.
Due to erosion the educational institution is now on the verge of extinction.
Md. Shaheduzzaman, Headmaster of the primary school said they are so much concerned about the fate of the institution. He said the school building was about one km away from the river last year but presently it is only around 20 feet away from the river. If the erosion continues for few more days, the entire school building may disappear into the river very soon, he apprehended. The locals are trying to prevent erosion by dumping sand bags but despite these efforts erosion is continuing, he further said.
