53rd day of blockade passes off peacefully

The 53rd day of the countrywide indefinite transport blockade, enforced by the BNP-led 20-party alliance, passed off almost peacefully on Friday.
No major incidents of violence were reported from any part of the country during the blockade hours on the day.
In Chittagong, police recovered 17 petrol and 16 crude bombs, 2 kg gunpowder and 4 kg other bomb-making elements from Bandar area of the city on Friday night.
The law enforcers also arrested a young man, Imran, 25, in this regard. Further details about the arrestee are still awaited.
Tipped off, a team of Bandar Police Station conducted a drive at an abandoned house near Barrister Sultan Ahmed Chowdhury College in the area around 8:30pm, said officer-in-charge of the police station Zahidul Islam.
During the drive, the law enforcers recovered the bombs and bomb-making materials, he said.  
They also arrested Imran suspecting his involvement in stocking those items.
In the capital, police arrested at least 14 leaders and activists of BNP and Jamaat-Shibir from different places during a drive continuing for 24 hours till on Friday morning.
Vehicular movement was normal while a large number of law enforcers remained deployed in different parts of the capital to fend off any trouble.
A truck helper, who suffered burn injuries in a petrol bomb attack by miscreants in Bogra on February 23, died at Dhaka Medical College Hospital early Friday.
The deceased was identified as Mohammad Jahangir, 30 of Nischintpur village in Kahalu upazila of Bogra district.
In Joypurhat, a potato-laden truck was set afire by unidentified miscreants in Jhopjhari area of Panchbibi upazila on Thursday night.
Meanwhile, the BNP-led 20-party alliance on Friday announced yet another 72-hour spell of nationwide hartal from 6am on Sunday alongside its ongoing countrywide indefinite transport blockade to push for its various demands, including a fresh national election under a non-party administration.
In a statement, BNP joint secretary general Salahuddin Ahmed, on behalf of the alliance, announced the shutdown programme.
The shutdown programme was announced a day after Salahuddin threatened to enforce a fresh spell of hartal from Sunday if the government does not meet its demands.
