UNB, Dhaka :
Some 5,290 people were killed and 1,236 went missing in 656 river accidents across the country in the last two decades, says a survey.
All members of 383 families perished while 656 families were left destitute losing their wage earners in the accidents from 1994 to 2013, according to the survey conducted by Ashis Kumer Dey, chief editor of ptbnews24.com.
The survey findings were disseminated at a function held at Mukti Bhaban at the city’s Paltan on Monday.
Speakers at the function alleged that country’s river transport sector saw no expected development due to indifference of the subsequent governments.
They attributed desperate river grabbing and pollution to scores of casualty as well as shrinking of river routes across the country every year, urging the government and all concerned to give more attention in this regard.
Former president of Communist of Party of Bangladesh Manzurul Ahsan Khan, water expert Engineer M Enamul Haque, Prof Dr Meer Tarique Ali of Buet, former VP of RACSU Ragib Hasan Munna, Advocate Tasnim Rana and member secretary of Nirapad Nou Path Bastabayun Andolan Aminur Rasul spoke on the occasion.
