Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) will construct a 52 kilometres of walkways on riversides surrounding the capital in phases.
Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan and State Minister for Shipping Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury inaugurated the project work at Kholamara in Kamrangirchar area on Saturday. Parliamentarians Kamrul Islam and Haji Mohammad Selim, among others, were present as special guests. BIWTA Chairman M Mahbub Ul Islam presided over the inaugural ceremony.
The government is determined to protect the rivers from encroachment, speaking Asaduzzaman Khan at a rally while launching 12 master plans to save rivers including Buriganga, Turag, Balu and Shitalakkhya.
“The banks of Buriganga will be turned into tourist spots that will attract even the foreigners,” he said.
If someone tries to occupy the river again, the law enforcing agencies will take legal action, the Home Minister said.
State Minister for Shipping Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury said that the river would be free from pollution within the next 10 years. If there is any religious institution in the illegal place it will be removed elsewhere. No one will be given any illegal advantage if there is any obstruction to this activity.
“We will evict illegal structures from the banks of rivers Buriganga, Shitalakkhya and Balu and build 52-kilometre walkways on the riversides at first to make sure that these banks don’t get occupied in the future again,” he said.
He urged all to work together to protect rivers. “Rivers are the lifeline of the nation and no country exists if the rivers are gone,” he said.
These master plans cover about a 52km stretch from Narayanganj’s Fatullah to Gabtoli. The plans include installing 40km embankment, 100 RCC stairs, 105 railings, 19 RCS jetties, 38 spots, 10,820 boundary pillars, 36 signboards, six pontoons, three eco-parks and two tourism parks under a project at a cost of Tk 845.55 crore. The project work will be completed within June 2022.
