More than half of the accused in corruption cases of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) were acquitted during the last five years.
The lapses of the existing law and lack of seriousness on the part of the ACC lawyers have been described as some of the reasons behind acquittal of the accused.
A total of 1,507 corruption cases involving 851 graft cases have been disposed of during the last five years. In 665 cases the accused were awarded punishment of different degrees.
Of the accused only a few are in jails while most others are absconding.
The ACC inherited a total of 10,083 cases from the then Bureau of Anti-Corruption (BAC). Of the total cases, 7,000 were disposed of during the period.
The ACC is now facing difficulties in moving ahead with the remaining cases in absence of adequate documentary evidence or witness, sources in ACC told the media.
The lengthy procedural process, the source said, also hampers disposal of case. Some lawyers are now being appointed to strengthen the law department of the ACC so that the ACC’s cases can be handled more effectively, sources said.
