50,000 tonnes of rice import approved

The Cabinet Purchase Committee on Wednesday approved 12 proposals, including import of 50,000 metric tonnes of non-Bashmoti parboiled rice.
The extension of 250 MW power deal with India also got approval of the Cabinet body at its meeting held with Finance Minister AMA Muhith in the chair.
The 50,000 mts of parboiled rice will be procured from the international market at a rate of $430 per metric tonne. Dubai-based Phinix Global company will supply the rice at the total contract value of Tk 178.45 crore.
The Food Ministry moved the proposal to import the rice against the backdrop of possible shortage of foodgrain due to floods in the country’s northeastern districts.
The Power Division’s proposal to extend the existing deal for another six months to import 250 MW power from Indian open market through Power Trading Corporation (PTC) received the committee nod.
The electricity tariff was also fixed at Tk 6.064 per unit for the next 6 months. The existing 3 years deal will expire on July 31.
The Cabinet body approved two separate tender proposals to import some 10 suction dredgers, including crane boats. Karnaphuli Ship Building Company won both the contracts as the lowest bidder. As per the proposals, the Karnaphuli will supply five 20-inch cutter suction dredgers and crane boats at Tk 514.51 crore while it will supply the other five 20-inch cutter suction dredgers and crane boats at Tk 465.51 crore.
The BIWTA under the Shipping Ministry will import the dredgers and crane boats under its project for procuring a total of 20 dredgers and other equipment.
The Cabinet body approved some six tender proposals of Rural Electrification Board (REB) for procuring transformers, electric poles, conductors and other equipment.
Of these, Toshiba Trading and Distribution Company, India won a contract to
supply 26,000 distribution transformers at Tk 182.91 crore while four separate companies won the contracts under 5 lots to supply conductors and ACSR (Bare and Insulated) at Tk 346.49 crore.
Local company TS Trading won a contract to supply 23,210 distribution transformers at Tk 170.25 crore while other local companies Gemcom and Sheltech won the contract to supply 115,420 SPC poles at Tk 223.86 crore under separate lots. Local company EnergyPac’s two tender proposals to supply and construct total six 33/11 kV substations at Tk 38,.02 crore received the Cabinet body’s nod.
It also approved the cost extension proposals of an 850-metre bridge on the Teesta River and 950-metre bridge on the Dharala River. The cost of the bridge over the Teesta rose to Tk 123.86 crore posting a rise by Tk 2.20 crore while the bridge over the Dharla has been increased by Tk 4.69 crore to Tk 196.45 crore.
