During the coronavirus pandemic in last 10 months, the main causes of deaths in the country were heart diseases and suicide.
Some 5,200 people died from coronavirus infection while 11,000 committed suicide and 1.80 lakh people died of cardiac arrest during the period.
Statistics and Information Management Division Secretary Md Yamin Chowdhury revealed the grim figure at a workshop in the city on Thursday. National Accounting (Price & Wages) Wing of Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics organised the ‘Stakeholder (Media) Consultation Workshop’.
“In separate studies, conducted in 10 months of previous fiscal year and the corresponding period of the current fiscal, we found some 5,200 people died from Covid-19 infection. But, 1.80 lakh people died of heart diseases and cardiac arrest while 11,000 had committed suicide,” he said.
“We’ve only run behind the Covid-19, but we need to interfer in other issues on which we did not notice,” said the Secretary, adding, “If we don’t put importance on those issues thus the number of patients having other diseases will rise. BBS is responsible for disseminating the information.”
Earlier on February 4, Centre for Governance Studies (CGS) in a virtual meeting informed that some 1,58 people killed themselves during March 2020-November 2020 period while the number was 940 during June 2019-November 2020. That means, the number of committing suicide has rose by 13 percent during nine months of coronavirus pandemic.
