A total of 4,947 accounts with state-owned Rupali Bank have remained idle for 10 years.
Neither the accountholders nor their nominees claimed the money during the period.
According to data published by the bank for the just concluded year, the money deposited with the accounts at 84 branches amounted to Tk 6.835 million.
Rupali Bank is preparing to send detailed account information from accounts to the central bank as per the Bank Company Act.
The law provides for keeping the unclaimed money with the central bank for a year.
If the accountholders or their nominees do not claim the money in the period, it will be deposited with the national exchequer.
Bankers said transactions in accounts usually stopped for several reasons including clines’ death, going abroad and change of jobs.
Banks classify such accounts as ‘dormant’ after five years of idleness. After 10 years of such state, the banks close the accounts and transfer deposited to the Bangladesh Bank.
The highest number of 1,298 accounts have remained idle in Rupali Bank’ Rampura branch (in Dhaka), which is followed by Kolaroa branch in Satkhira where 1,137 accounts are idle.
Uttara Bank, Agrani Bank, HSBC, National Bank of Pakistan, the City Bank, Prime Bank, AB Bank, BASIC Bank, Eastern Bank, National Bank and United Commercial Bank earlier sent information of idle accounts with them to the central bank.
