Members of Coast Guard on Sunday detained over 500 Indian fishermen along with 32 trawlers in the Bay of Bengal near Payra port in Kolapara upazila on charge of intruding into Bangladesh maritime territory.
Kolapara Upazila Nirbahi Officer Md Munibur Rahman said the Indian fishermen, hailing from different areas of West Bengal, were
detained by a Coast Guard team from Raynabad Estuary around 1:30 pm .
The exact number of the detained fishermen could not be known yet, he said
However, the Indian fishermen claimed that they were forced to enter Bangladesh maritime territory amid stormy weather.
They will be handed over to Kolapara Police Station after completing legal procedure.
