Diarrhoea, pneumonia break out in Bogra: 500 including 100 children admitted to hospital

As a cold wave sweeps through the northern region, viral, bacterial and respiratory diseases have broken out in Bogra affecting mostly the children.
More than 500 people, including 100 children, have been admitted to Bogra Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital in last three days following an outbreak of diarrhoeal and pneumonia in the city and its suburbs.
Hospital sources said more patients are pouring in, but no death has so far been reported. More patients are also being treated in different private clinics. The disease has also broken out in 12 upazilas of the district.12 upozila health complex 300 children have been admitted last three days. A heat wave sweeping across the northern districts are helping spread viral diseases like diarrhea and pneumonia and young children are the primary victims of these diseases, Bogra Mohammad Ali Hospital sources confirmed. Bogra Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital and Bogra Mohammad Ali 250-Bed Hospital, diarrhoeal patients overflowed the observation ward into the verandas outside.
The hospital has witnessed a rise in the number of diarrhoeal patients this month, but the figure shot up unexpectedly after the weather turned cold on Wednesday.
“Such a rush of diarrhoeal patients is a bit unusual,” said Dr Samir Hussein Mishu, Residential Medical Officer (RMO) of Bogra Mohammad Ali 250-bed hospital. “The cold is certainly not the reason for the disease, but unhygienic food coupled with cold might have aggravated the situation,” he said.
Supply water might have been contaminated, a source in Bogra Municipality said, adding that the Public Health Engineering Department found micro-organisms in the supply water last week.
Hospital sources said the stock of saline used to treat diarrhoeal and cholera patients has been exhausted, and the patients are being forced to buy their own medicine. Though normally the city hospitals lack patients during the cold wave, little children with asthma, bronchiolitis, bronchitis, pneumonia and diarrhoeal diseases were found thronging the hospitals accompanied by their guardians. The city drugstores also saw an increase in sale of medicines for treating cold in the last couple of days.
A total of 30 infants came to the emergency outpatient department of Bogra Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital and Bogra Mohammad Ali 250-bed Hospital Dhaka Shishu Hospital till noon on Thursday.
