Five hundred fish enclosures in Bagerhat have been washed away as heavy rain waterlogs the homes of thousands of families, and submerges betel-leaf plantations and seedbeds.
Deputy Director of the department of Agriculture Extension Md Aftab Uddin told bdnews24.com that they have recorded around 300 millimetres of rainfall in the last week.
“Almost 1500 hectares of seedbeds including betel-leaves and Aman rice have been submerged by water,” he said. There is a high risk of losing the seedbeds of Aman rice and betel-leaf if the heavy rain continues, he said.
District Fisheries Officer Zia Haider is concerned about the severe damage the rains could do to the lives of farmers and fishermen.
“At least 500 fish enclosure have been submerged in Sadar Upazila and Chitalmari since the start of the rainy season. Most others are near overflowing. If this rain continues the enclosure will drown completely and any who draw income from them will suffer a huge loss,” he said.
Many of the fish farmers are attempting to trap the fish by repairing dams and throwing nets over them.
The homes of hundreds of people were waterlogged at different areas of the Sadar Upazila’s. Many of the local dams have overflowed. The water has accumulated in front of many houses, submerging stoves and making it difficult to cook.
Polghat village resident Md Murad said, “Now the river has overflowed the streets and submerged our home. Heavy continuous rain for the past four days has submerged our garden. We don’t have proper drainage so the water is not moving.” Karapara Uniron Parishad Officer Jahidur Rahman told bdnews24.com that hundreds of people in his area have been waterlogged.
He demanded the renovation of local canals. “We are suffering due to lack of drainage system,” he said. “A few days of rain can cause waterlogging and submerge betel-leaf seed beds and fish enclosure. We are facing a great financial crisis.”
“There is a lot of suffering due to the lack of a water supply system.”
Many public representative from different areas across the country have made similar claims.
