About 500 acres of Boro fields in eight villages under Mithachhari Union in Ramu Upazila of the district have been under water for the last two weeks.
The Boro fields have been submerged due to sudden rise in water of a rubber dam, which is operated by Banglabazar Banskkhali Water Management Samabay Samity in Sadar Upazila. As a result, thousands of farmers have fallen into great trouble.
After a recent visit, it was found that the Boro lands at Baroiapara, Umkhali, Kanthir Matha, Koroillamura, Chaillatoli, Toitoyapara, Jonumatborpara and Jiner Ghona areas are totally under water.
The small farmers asked the dam management committee and the local administration to drain out the water immediately for saving the Boro fields.
Shafiqur Rahman, son of Lal Miah, of Toitoyapara in Dakkhin Mithachhari, said, “I have 15 acres of land under the scheme in the area.
I cultivated Boro on 10 acres of land, which have been submerged for the last 10 to 12 days.”
Ansarul Haque, a scheme manger of Umakhali Abu Bakar Bepari Para, said, “I have 35 acres of land, but cultivation is possible on four to five acres of land only. If the water of the dam is not drained out, the Boro paddy will be damaged.”
Monir Ahmed, a farmer of Chaillatoli, said, “I cultivated Boro paddy on 4 acres of land.
Of those, three acres went under water. The Boro fields will be damaged if the water is not drained out soon.”
Abdul Moin, another scheme manager, said, “Farmers Rashid Ahmed, Sirajul Haque and Shafiul Alam informed the matter to dam management committee and the upazila administration.
But no one came forward to solve the problem.
So the Boro fields are under water for the last 15 days.”
Abdur Rahman, a farmer of Baroiapara area said not only Boro paddy, but also the fields of winter vegetables have also been submerged.
Abul Kalam Azad, founder of AK Azad High School, said, “The 500 acres of land in 10 villages have been submerged because of the dam water.
The villagers became worried fearing the damage of the Boro fields. I seek interference of the dam management committee and local administration.”
Monowar Hossen, president of ad hoc committee on Bankkhali Dam Water Management Samabay Samity Ltd, said, “The farmers informed us about the rise in water level.
But many farmers objected if the water is reduced. So, we are in dilemma. We will visit the area soon and take initiatives to solve the problem.”
While asked, Mahbub Alam, Deputy Assistant Agriculture Officer of Dakkhin Mithachchari Union admitted the matter.
Mohammad Shahjahan Ali, Ramu upazila nirbahi officer, said necessary steps would be taken after consulting with the dam authority.
