About fifty percent of 298 brick kilns in six districts of Barisal Division are allegedly operating without any permission of Department of Environment( DoE ) .
About 128 brick kilns were fined Tk. 54.16 lakh for that in the last 17 months.
Directorate of Environment, Barisal office sources said although 230 brick kilns in Barisal Division have taken license from DoE, but 145 of total 298 (49 percent) brick kilns are yet not improved ever after directions of DoE.
Sukumar Biswas, Director, DoE Barisal office, acknowledging the facts said according to the Brick Kiln Amendment Rule 2001 and Environment Conservation Act 1995 (amended in 2010) directed that brick kilns should not be constructed within the radius of three kilometers of any house or crop field, do not use wood logs as fuel.
