A team of Fishery Directorate and River Police on early Friday arresting four fishermen seized fifty mounds mother hilsa and Jatka ( hilsa fry less than ten-inch in length) from Shaheed Abdur Rob Serniabad Bridge( Dapdapia bridge) area of the city.
Bimal Chandra Das, district fishery officer (hilsa), said the arrestees with the seized hilsa were produced before a mobile court led by administrative magistrate Nazmul Hussain Khan on Friday morning at Barisal.
The court jailed Shah Alam and Liton Ali two fishermen to 15 months imprisonment with Tk 5 thousand as fine each for netting hilsa during the 22-day ban period and catching Jatka.
The other two fishermen Alauddin and Mahe Alam were fined Tk. 5 thousand each.
All of the four fishermen were from Bhola. They were convicted for netting mother Hilsa during 22-day ban period and catching Jatka. Seized hilsa were going to Khulna from Bhola by a mini truck, said Sub Inspector Shafiqul Islam of River Traffic Police.
The seized Hilsa later distributed among the orphanages, madrashas, and old-homes in the city.
The action was taken for violating 22 days country- wide ban enforced from October 12 to November 2 against netting, transportation and marketing hilsa. However netting and marketing Jatka banned round the year, fishery office sources said.
