The government will sell rice at Tk 10 per kg to 50 lakh poor families across the country.
Disaster Management and Relief Minister Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya yesterday said this in the Jatiya Sangsad on behalf of Food Minister Quamrul Islam while replying to a written question of treasury bench member Begum Amatul Kibria Keya Chowdhury.
Under the programme, the government will provide 30 kilograms of rice to each of the families every month, the minister said adding that the selling of rice would continue for five months.
The distribution of rice among the extreme poor families through cards has begun this month at the village and union levels.
Replying to another question of treasury bench member Gazi M, M Amzad Hossain Milon on behalf of the food minister, Maya said the population of the country was 15.91 crore in the fiscal 2015-16 and according to the Bangladesh Institute of Development Studies (BIDS) survey 2012, per person requires 462 grams of rice and 46.21 grams of wheat every day.
And the total require of food grains is 295.43 lakh tonnes annually, he added.
The minister said the net production of food grains in the fiscal 2015-16 was 307.60 lakh tonnes with a surplus of 27.70 lakh tones. On the other hand, he said, the country has a deficit of 15.50 lakh tonnes in wheat production. The total surplus of food grains in the fiscal was 12.20 lakh tonnes, he added.
