At least 50 people, including Companyganj Police Station officer-in-charge and five other policemen, were injured in a clash between groups of Awami League in Companyganj upazila of Noakhali on Tuesday.
The clash took place allegedly between the supporters of Noakhali’s Basurhat municipality mayor Abdul Quader Mirza and Companyganj upazila unit Awami league organising secretary Mizanur Rahman Badal at Basurhat Bazar around 6pm, reported our correspondent.
During the clash, both groups threw brick chips at each other, exploded crude bombs and fired blank shots, leaving 50 people injured, witnesses said.
Talking to reporters, Badal alleged that the clash ensued as followers of Mirza attacked their rally protesting the attack on Comapnyganj upazila AL President Khijir Hayat Khan allegedly by supporters of Mirza on Monday afternoon.
Six policemen, including the OC, were injured when they tried to bring the situation under control, said Rabiul Haque, inspector (investigation) of Companyganj Police Station.
On information, a team of Rab-11 and additional policemen rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control, said Md Alamgir Hossain, superintendent of Noakhali police.
Contacted, Quader Mirza said he does not know who carried out the attack.
