Police and BNP activists locked in a clash in Naogaon district town on Tuesday, leaving at least 50 people including cops injured.
Police and witnesses said as part of party programmer, district BNP tried to bring out a processing around 12 noon in protest against the death of a Hefazat activist. A fisticuff began when police tried to intercept them. At one stage, police charged batons on the protesters to disperse them.
The BNP men regrouped near the party office at KD’s crossing and pelted brickbats to law enforcers. In retaliation, police fired blank shots and lobbed teargas shells.
Traffic on Bridge crossing-College crossing road and KD’s crossing-Bridge Road has been disrupted due to the clash.
The BNP men left the place after deployment of additional police.
District BNP convenor Hafizur Rahman claimed police charged batons on his party men without any provocation when they tried to bring out a protest procession.
“Police also lobbed tear gas shells and fired rubber bullets and gunshots that left 50 leaders and activists injured,” he said.
Hafizur Rahman also said BNP activists Mili Akhter and student leader Azizul, injured in police firing, were taken to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital while the others admitted to Naogaon sadar Hospital and other clinics.
Rakibul Akhter, additional superintendent of Naogaon Police, said the BNP men tried to take out a procession on the busy street without prior permission.
They threw brickbats when police intercepted them that left 6/7 police personnel injured, the ASP added.
He also said police lobbed teargas shells and rubber bullet to bring the situation under control.
