At least four pagodas on the Zadi hill at Boilya Para area in the district town have turned risky for lack of proper care and unabated hill cutting. As a result, about 50 families living in the area are at risk of landslide.
Local resident Dalim Barua said the pagodas are the only tradition of the Buddhists living in Cox’s Bazar town. Besides, those are tourist spots, too.
Except the four pagodas, another collapsed on some houses at the foot of the hill following continuous rainfall for the last few days.
Another resident Karabi Barua said soil around the collapsed pagoda was removed last year. As no step was taken, the entire pagoda collapsed. Seven families living on the foot of the hill left the place some days ago while some more families are at risk of landslide. Resident near the pagodas Kin Mu said there are many risky houses surrounding the stair towards the pagodas.
The soil disperses gradually from the base of the pagodas following rainfall. If the rest pagodas are not protected, these will become extinct soon.Inspector of Environment Department, district office, Jahanara Yeasmin visited the spot where the pagoda collapsed on Sunday last. She said as the houses on the hill were built cutting soil, so the rest pagodas are at risk of collapse.
While asked, Deputy Director of Environment Department, district office, Saiful Ashrab said district administration held a meeting over protecting the pagodas on the Zadi hill. It was decided in the meeting that the surrounding areas of the pagodas will be declared as tourism spot. The Cox’s Bazar Municipality will take step to protect the pagodas. The risky houses around the pagodas will be evicted.
Municipality Mayor Mujibur Rahman said, “I know the condition of the pagodas. We will take steps soon to protect the pagodas.”
