Some 50 candidates are preparing for national polls for six constituencies in Sylhet from ruling Awami League (AL), Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), Jamaat, Jatiya Party (JP) and others are conducting their election campaign with full speed.
The candidates have already pasted colorful banners, posters, festoons and graffiti on walls of different establishments even on trees depicting their particular electoral pledges and seeking vote to ensure their win.
The candidates are participating in public functions including religious and social ones and are trying to motivate people to cast their valuable votes on their favor. From the last Eid-ul-Fitr and Eid-ul-Azha, and Durga Puja, the possible candidates started their campaigns gradually. As days are passing by, the campaign field is becoming more jubilant with various activities.
Sylhet-1 (City and Sadar): Sylhet-1 Constituency consist with Sylhet city and Sadar. This seat spreads many rumor. All are based upon Finance Minister AMA Muhith. Once he said, he will not contest due to age complication . His followers said, he will contest.
Long time Finance Minister said his brother and former Bangladesh Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations Dr AK Abdul Momen will contest the poll. For this he introduced Dr. Momen in many occasions.
Momen’s followers said he has already received green signal. He works in grassroot level. AL Organizing Secretary Misliah Uddin Siraj made his candidacy in front of Mr. Muhit in a meeting.
In this regard , Dr Momen said, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has asked me to continue activities in the area and the party will take decision in consultation with Finance Minister AMA Muhith . He further said, I am working at the instruction of the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
BNP faces candidate shortage after the demise of M Saifur Rahman. Mrs Zia will be a candidate in this constituency.
Dr Zabaida Rahman may be another probable candidate. But Khaleda’s Advisor Khandokar A Muktadir is trying to get nomination. Present SCC Mayor Ariful Haque Chowdhury is another candidate from BNP. JP President HM Ershad will be another candidate. Former Election Commissioner Sohul Hussain will be another candidate in AL.
Sylhet-2 (Osmani Nogor- Biswanth Balagonj partial): M. Yahya Chowdhury from JAPA is present MP in this seat. JP is adamant to preserve this seat. But AL is not ready to give any concession. Mr Shafiqur Rahman Chowdhury former MP and GS of Sylhet district AL wants to contest probable candidates from this seat are former district AL president ANM Shafiqul Haq, Joint GS of UK AL Anwaruzzaman Chawdhury, District AL deputy officer secretary Aktaruzzman Chowdhury Joglu, Khalafat Mojlish leader M. Muntasir Ali.
Anwaruzzman Chowdhury also work with his followers. Wife of former MP Ilius Ali Tahsina Rushdiluna will take part in the election. It is imagined. Alhaz Delwar Hassain of Khelafat Majlis start his work. He was former president of Chatrta Majlish. He isa life member f KMSS He works in his area for humanity since 2005. At the same time he try to development the education of his area. With the help of Yatim Trust UK. He built 15 houses for poor.
Sylhet-4 ( Compenigonj- Goainghat): Present MP of AL Mr Imran Ahmed is an educated person. He can not take bold step Against Stone quarry syndicate. It is his weakness. It will be an issue in next poll. Mr Dildar Hussain Selim will contest form BNP. In his area he is known as fighter person. Goainghat upozila chairman A Hakim Chowdhury, JAPA Leader ATU Taj Rahman, Jamaat Leader Jainta Upazila chairman Jainul Abedin will contest in the poll. Dr Ahmed Alkabir former Chairman of Rupali bank will be a candidate in this constituency. He is a NGO personality and involve with development work. Along with former M.P Hafiz Ahmed Mazumdar, Former MP Principal Moulana Farid Uddin Chawdhury, AL Leader Musuk uddin Ahmed, Monir Ahmed, Mumin Chawdhury of JP etc.
Former BNP MP and Senior VP of District Committee A Kahir Chowdhury are lobbing for nomination. Present Upazila Chairman Asik Chowdhury is in discussion. Jamaat leader Farid Chowdhury will try to contest. AL give this seat to JP in last Poll. Now thy want to regain this seat. In 73 AL leader A Latif 79 independent Haris Chowdhury, 86 JP’s M R Majumder, 91 Farid Uddin Chowdhury of Jamaat elected.
