Embankment collapses: 5 villages flooded, 8000 marooned in Koyra

The sudden embankment collapse on Monday evening on the river ‘Kapatakkha’ at 13/14-2 No. polder of Gazipara embankment in North Bedkashi area of Koyra upazila in the district has affected at least 100 houses.
Over 8000 families have been marooned and hundreds of acres of paddy field and around 100 shrimp enclosures washed away, said local public representatives.
The five flood affected villages are : Gazipara, Dewankhali, Putirgheri, Bedkashi and Katmarchar.
Several families have taken shelter in other villages as their houses went under water.
The newly elected UP chairman of North Bedkashi union said, two villages were flooded , repair works are urgent at this very moment.
The homeless Alam Sana, Ruhul Amin, Shahidul Islam, Tarapado Mondal, Krishno Gaine have taken shelter over wapda embankment along with the members of their families.
Being informed, Upazila chairman A K M Tomijuddin, Upazila Nirbahi Officer(UNO) Md. Bodiuzzaman and newly elected UP Chairman Sardar Nurul Islam visited the embankment collapse area and they directed the concerned authorities to be initiative for speedy repair of the embankment.
UP Chairman Nurul Islam alleged that hundreds of local people had lost their homesteads in the last year due to embankment collapse, but the Water Development Board authorities had not taken any initiative at that time.
Faruk Ahmed, Sub divisional Engineer of the Water Development Board (WDB) said, local people have already started repairing works of the embankment as self labour basis, however, We are trying to start repairing works as early as possible.
Sand lifting from river Bhairab triggers erosion
Due to mindless sand lifting from the river Bhairab at Daulatpur area in Khulna city, erosion has been causing alarmingly.
Despite the stern action by the district administration against the illegal sand lifting, some influential gangs are continuing to lift sand from the river Bhairab and its adjoining areas.
Trader Nazrul Islam told this correspondent that he has lost his business institution due to erosion caused by illegal sand lifting from the river Bhairab.
“I strongly protested against illegal sand lifting from the river but the saqnd lifters didn’t listen to me as they are local musclemen”, he added.
Ashfaq Bhuyan, another trader said, “We are always in fear of river erosion as the illegal sand lifters are continuing sand lifting without any hesitation.”
Syed Abdul Jalil, a businessman said, “We are passing sleepless days and nights as the river erosion might cause at any moment owing to illegal sand lifting from the river Bhairab.”
“We don’t dare to protest against the illegal sand lifting in fear of physical and mental harassment”, he added.
On condition of anonymity, an official of Water Development Board (WDB) said that they know about the matter, but can not do anything as the sand lifters are allegedly involved with the ruling party.
An high official of WDB said that the district administration would conduct drives against illegal sand lifters within short time.
A reliable source of district administration said, the administration is going to file caes against the illegal sand lifters as early as possible.
