The local administration imposed a ban on swimming in the Piyain river at Jaflong of Goainghat upazila from Friday, following the drowning of five tourists in the river on Thursday afternoon.
Besides announcing the ban using mikes at market places, additional forces of police, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and Village Defence Party (VDP) have been deployed in the area to implement the ban.
The district’s Deputy Commissioner (DC) M Shahidul Islam said it was very inspiring that a huge number of tourists came to Jaflong on the Eid holidays this year, but there was no other way but to impose the ban on swimming considering the safety of the tourists.
