A court has sentenced five to death over the 2010 robbery of a Manikganj journalist’s house and the murder of his mother.
The verdict on the Singair incident was announced by Manikganj Additional District Judge Al Mahmud Faizul Kabir on Tuesday.
Three of the convicts, Md Issaq Bhuiyan, Bacchu Miah and Shahidul Islam, were present in court during the hearing. The two other convicts – Iman Ali and Nannu Miah – were released on bail and are absconding.
According to the case documents, the suspects robbed the home of Daily Ittefaq Singair Correspondent Manabendra Chakrabarti on Aug 9, 2010.
The convicts allegedly entered Chakrabarti’s home, strangled his mother Uma Debi to death and made off with a significant quantity of gold jewellery.
Chakrabarti filed a robbery and murder case at the Singair Police Station the following day. Police then filed a chargesheet against five suspects on Sept 27, 2011.
The verdict was announced after hearing the testimony of 13 witnesses, MPP Mothur Nath Sarkar told bdnews24.com.
“We have received justice after seven years,” Manabendra Chakrabarti told bdnews24.com after the hearing. “We hope the absconding suspects are apprehended soon and that their sentences are carried out swiftly.”
Mejabul Huq, Madhab Saha and Shipra Rani Saha, who represented the defence at the hearing, say they will appeal against the verdict.
