A court here on Monday sentenced five people to death for killing a teenage boy in Baniachong upazila 22 years ago.
The condemned convicted are Ali Haider, Habib Miah, Renu Miah and Ranju Miah of Agua village and Abdul Ahad of Tikkajhuri village of the upazila. Among the convicts, Ranju was tried in absentia while others were present in the dock.
According to prosecution, Ali Haider, son of Sirajul of Agua village, had enmity with his step mother Rupchan Bibi over a land. Rupchan used to live in a separate house with her son Ziaul,15, after her divorce with Sirajul.
Rupchan’s son Ziaul went missing after Ali Haider called him out of his house on 13 May in 1994. Later, police recovered Ziaul’s body from a jungle of the village on the following day.
Rupchan filed a case with Habiganj court accusing nine people on January 19. 1995.
After examining the records and 13 witnesses, Additional district and sessions judge Mafruza Parvin handed down the verdict.
